Online Cello Lessons!
Welcome!
Thanks for checking out the Lysaker Studio. I have almost a decade of experience teaching strings in many different contexts--in private lessons, group classes, school music, and ensembles. I began my study as an educator at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where I was trained by the directors of the String Academy. I taught for three years as a faculty member at the IU String Academy, and I also spent four years teaching group violin at a public elementary school through the Fairview Project. I have degrees in cello performance and music education from Indiana University and Columbia University Teachers College, and I hold Suzuki certification in cello volumes 1-7. My studio is currently open for new students! Read on to learn more about my teaching philosophy and availability. Interested in joining my studio? Fill out the contact form below and I'll get back to you within two business days. |
Teaching Philosophies
In the Applied Studio
My studio is open to students of all ages and levels. Each lesson is co-led by me and the student and/or their families, based on the student's individual goals and interests. I teach primarily in the Suzuki Method, and I am certified in Cello Volumes 1-7. I supplement the Suzuki Method with composition and improvisation, performing in modern genres, and repertoire that is relevant to my students. I am also proud to run a studio that is accessible to disabled and neurodiverse students. Music-making and learning must be accessible, and I am committed to adapting my curriculum to meet the needs of every learner. In the String Classroom I implement string curricula that relies on youth input and direct student involvement in an open, judgment-free learning environment. Unfortunately, many string and orchestral music programs focus exclusively on the ideals of Western classical art music without recognizing and exploring the versatility of string instruments in other genres including hip hop, jazz, heavy metal, and punk rock. Culturally responsive teaching in orchestral programs builds on the community’s knowledge and ways of musicking to create authentic, meaningful musical experiences that reflect the cultures of performers and the audience. Musicking that builds on student knowledge and expertise elevates and validates performers, motivating them to meet high standards while building cultural competency and a mutually supportive learning environment. I am proud to be a faculty member with the Youth Orchestra of St. Luke's, serving the Hells Kitchen community in after-school programs. As a Practice Coach I help students of all levels and at all stages in their learning develop practice routines, prepare for auditions, set ambitious and achievable goals, and organize their time to maximize their effectiveness in the practice room! If you're the parent of a child taking private lessons or enrolled in school music and you're interested in helping them build a sustainable and enjoyable practice routine, practice coaching might be right for you.
